Bluegrass to Blue Ridge 5-5-21 (Dollywood)

What a day we had…a good time was had by all, but Amusement Parks do take their toll on those of a more advanced age!  I don’t remember it being so difficult to exit swinging rides when I was in my twenties.

Our morning start was little delayed.  As we were climbing into the car, a neighbor in a passing vehicle stopped to point out a nearby mammal; two doors down a very large brown bear was raiding a couple of trash cans!  We decided to retreat to our deck, for a more protected viewing spot.  It certainly seemed to like what was on the breakfast menu and did not seem to mind an audience.  After capturing a few great pictures, when his attention turned elsewhere, we quickly jumped into the car and headed down the mountain.

Dollywood is not yet open every day and is limiting how many guests can enter.  We purchased day specific tickets several weeks before leaving home.  The restriction on the number of guests, along with a strong threat of rain, made for an intimate experience.  All day we were able to walk directly onto every ride; even the major roller coasters were running half full.

We spent most of the day in the sections designed for younger children and frequently joined in the fun.  We discovered that Amelia loves roller coasters and does not like the rocking Pirate’s Ship.  Many of the rides that we enjoyed ourselves when younger were still enjoyable;  however, it did take a lot longer for us to get in and out of the rides.  Somehow, I don’t remember the cramped knee room or the need to have someone steady the swinging car as I climbed in and out.

Dollywood has an annual Flower and Food show.  Although we didn’t try any of the special food items offered, we did enjoy the many topiaries throughout the park.  It must take a full time staff to keep them looking so lifelike.

Our last evening at the cabin provided the closest thing to sunset we have had; mostly we experienced rain and overcast skies.  We did enjoy watching the clouds/fog roll in and out.  The evening was spent doing a little laundry and re-organizing items for the next part of the trip; bus travel is a little different than hanging out in a cabin in the clouds.
